January 4 – The Scout Association is incorporated throughout the British Commonwealth by Royal Charter.
January 5 – Prague Party Conference: Vladimir Lenin and the Bolshevik Party break away from the rest of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. [Wikipedia features the “Stalinized” version of this event]
January 8 – The African National Congress is founded.
The Italo-Turkish War was still winding down when hostilities opened in the Balkans. The Italian occupation of Libya, by exposing the renewed weakness of the Ottoman regime, also announced a new imperialist entry into the Ottoman sweepstakes, further disturbing the balance of power and directly encouraging the outbreak of war in the Balkans.
